Solution providers looking to provide a wireless print server for their customers could easily become overwhelmed by the hundreds of options available to them. Print servers come in all shapes and sizes and range in price from around $30 to more than $200. As for the models priced above the $200 range, CRN Test Center engineers believe there are a number of highly functional print servers at much more reasonable prices.
CRN Test Center engineers especially like two particular wireless print servers: Hewlett-Packard's Jetdirect ew2400 and Trendware International's TEW-PS1U wireless print server. Both are affordable and provide excellent efficiency and performance, and both companies offer adequate channel programs and extensive hardware warranties.
Both devices were set up in the same environment and were attached to an HP LaserJet 4250TN printer.
HPJETDIRECT EW2400
The printer was first connected to the HP wireless print server, and software was installed on a client machine with built-in 802.11g connectivity. The HP wireless USB print server maintained a strong signal connection with the printer, and once the installation was complete, the device was transparent to the printer. To test the print server, simple text files were sent through the print queue and they began printing in no time without complications.
HP's Jetdirect ew2400 USB wireless print server supports the 802.11g standard and is also backward-compatible with the 802.11b standard. The print server uses WEP encryption to ensure data security. Besides support for the 802.11b/g standards, the print server also provides support for wired Ethernet connections.

The Jetdirect ew2400 features a USB 1.1 interface which supports a single independent printer. The device includes a Web configuration interface, which allows the solution provider to manage the printer remotely from any standard browser for setup and management tasks.
The unit is small enough to be held in one hand and is not at all obtrusive in an office environment. The back of the device features a 10/100 Ethernet port, a USB interface and a DC power connector along with a reset/test button. The Jetdirect ew2400 802.11g wireless print server is priced at $199 and is covered by a one-year limited warranty.
HP's PartnerOne channel program includes various compensation programs based on the types of products and sales volume sold by solution providers. Sales and marketing collateral and presentations, as well as other sales and technical resources are available at the HP PartnerOne Web site. The vendor customizes its marketing assistance and other support offerings to meet the specific needs of its partners.
TRENDWARE TEW-PS1U
Trendware's TEW-PS1U wireless print server is a tiny bit smaller than the HP device and is identical in functionality. The unit boasts a single antenna that protrudes from the back of the device. Unfortunately, the TEW-PS1U does not support the 802.11g standard. CRN Test Center engineers found that when transmitting black-and-white images to the connected printer, printing results were slower with the Trendware device than with HP's ew2400.
Printing results were similar to the HP print server in that the Trendware device also worked without compatibility issues. Job timing was delayed as mentioned above, but the Trendware print server was running on the 802.11b standard rather than 802.11g. CRN Test Center engineers also took into account that the test printer was made by HP, which automatically guaranteed better compatibility with the HP ew2400 print server. However, aside from the timing issues, the Trendware device performed more than adequately during testing.
When printing large color images, both devices took a relatively long time to transmit the data to the printer, but the Trendware device was slower than HP's. At one point, the process was taking so long thatCRN Test Center engineers even checked the LCD buttons on the printer to see if it was still transmitting data.
One gripe Test Center engineers had with these print servers was that neither will support printers that connect via parallel ports. Trendware, however, does make a sister product to the TEW-PS1U, the TEW-P1U1P, which comes equipped with parallel-port connection capabilities.
Trendware's channel program separates partners into two levels based on whether a partner is a distributor or a solution provider. Solution providers that want to become part of Trendware's partner program must provide a valid reseller permit to join. The TEW-PS1U wireless print server is priced at $149 and is covered by a three-year warranty.
Some of the main benefits of the company's channel program include special pricing for solution providers, monthly specials delivered by e-mail, monthly mail-in rebates for end users and dedicated, toll-free technical support. Trendware's tech support team also provides pre- and post-sales support to integrators. The average solution provider/reseller margin is 20 percent.
